National 4 Religious, Moral & Philosophical Studies (RMPS) is an engaging and thought-provoking course that encourages students to explore big questions about belief, morality, and philosophy. It’s designed to develop critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and an understanding of diverse perspectives.
Students will dive into three key units:
World Religion – Investigate the beliefs, practices, and impact of a major world religion.
Morality and Belief – Explore ethical issues such as human rights, medical ethics, or environmental responsibility.
Religious and Philosophical Questions – Debate fundamental questions about existence, morality, and the nature of belief.
National 4 RMPS is internally assessed and follows a pass/fail system. Students complete unit assessments and an Added Value Unit, where they research and present findings on a topic of their choice. There is no final exam, making it ideal for learners who thrive in continuous assessment.

National 5 Religious, Moral & Philosophical Studies (RMPS) is a dynamic and thought-provoking course that pushes students to analyse, evaluate, and debate some of life’s biggest questions. It builds on the foundations of National 4, encouraging deeper exploration of belief systems, ethical dilemmas, and philosophical theories.
Students will engage with three key areas:
World Religion – Investigate the beliefs, practices, and influence of a major world religion, considering its impact on individuals and society.
Morality and Belief – Tackle ethical issues such as euthanasia, justice, or environmental responsibility, weighing up different perspectives.
Religious and Philosophical Questions – Debate fundamental topics like the existence of God, free will, and the nature of reality.
National 5 RMPS is externally assessed, with students completing:
A final exam, testing knowledge, understanding, and evaluation skills.
A coursework assignment, where students research and present findings on a chosen topic, applying critical thinking and analysis.
